Phil's Handy Gardening Advice: Forcing Forsythia

Forcing anything or anybody to do something is not a healthy way of maintaining a long-lasting relationship.  Consider this before forcing Forsythia this spring.  The human-flora bond is a delicate one and your energy should be spent in engaging your plants in meaningful discussions.  Have you ever considered reading Kant to them?  By ignoring them and, even worse, forcing them, you may be missing out on cultural expansion.  Plants have been around for Millennia, certainly longer that mankind.  The wisdom they could share is lost when you "force" them to do something against their will.

NYTimes.com The Local's Cartoon Caption Contest Number Winners Announced

Oops! I have been derelict in my duties and three recent winners of the Cartoon Caption Contest from The Local haven't gotten their just rewards.  The winners from the New York Times' The Local Cartoon Caption Contest are:

March 8, 2010: Read About the March 8th Winning Entry for Contest 23 Here

And speaking of winners. The newly anointed February caption champ is …
Pastorflash!

And this is his caption:
“Yeah, but the overhead is really manageable.”

Special props go out to New York Times editor extraordinaire, Kathleen McElroy, who jumped in to judge in place of Mr. Newman.

February 1, 2010:  Read About the February 1st Winning Entry for Contest 22 Here

And speaking of winners: Congrats to Born Last Century, who Andy said nabbed the top spot “by a nose,” with this entry:
Yea, yea I get it: First black president takes office, massive financial bailouts, health-care overhaul. But Tiger Woods did what?
Congratulations, Born Last Century. And everyone else — keep those captions coming.

January 11, 2010: Read About the January 11th Winning Entry for Contest 21 Here

And speaking of winners: We have a couple of them for our last contest — as judged, once again, by our soon-to-be-departing-but-nevertheless-loyal Local colleague in Brooklyn, Andy Newman. Thanks, Andy.

And here was the submission by our winner, “HaHaHa” (appropriate, no?):
Don’t worry if you get hurt from the landing, our government is going to set-up a sweet universal health-care system.
In second place was this caption from “easi-lee”:
Hey buddy, the cops made a mistake. You don’t have to move to Staten Island. You can move to Brooklyn!
(Good one, even though we can’t vow that Andy Newman was completely unbiased in his judgment.)

Thanks to all who participated. Now try again!
