Since our unbesmirchable judge and co-blogger, Andy Newman, is on vacation this week, we had to find an unbesmirchable Times editor, Maplewood resident and festival attendee, Phyllis Messinger, to don the robes, blindfold and thought balloon of Cartoon Judge.
Here are the winners she chose:
“I swam my tail off at the Duck Races & now I’m a Nobody,” by Robb Bothe.
Second place:
“What time does the Rubber People Race begin?” by Beth Boily.
And, Honorable Mention, awarded by our marketing department to Maria Seigenthaler for:
“You’d have known the duck races were last month if you’d checked The Local!”
Robb wins a terrific bag of Times-related swag (coffee mug! t-shirt/tote-bag stuff! and more!) and a signed copy of the cartoon with his caption. Beth wins a copy of the cartoon with her caption on it, signed by Phil. And Maria earns our undying gratitude.

Why We Celebrate This Day
Put down your hot dogs and beer, this is the real reason we are celebrating this day.
Forget the politics of some of the readers ...
The words still give me a chill every time I hear them and give me hope for our still young democracy ....
